How to remove the background of an image

What if you have an image you’d like to use on your website, but the background isn’t transparent? Sure, you could Photoshop the background out by using the Magic Wand Tool and other methods, but wouldn’t it be easier to simply just remove the background in one step? While there are several ways to do this, here are three of the easiest tools you can use to remove the background of an image.

Step 1 – Select a Tool

When you’re working with photo editing software and trying to learn how to remove background from an image, it’s important to use a tool that allows you total control over what parts of your photo are kept and which are discarded. For example, some online tools require you to draw around each object in your picture; if you aren’t very careful, or don’t save your drawing step-by-step, you can end up throwing out something that should have been saved. In short: choose a program with tools that give complete control. Some possible choices include Photoshop Express (free) and Pixlr Editor (paid).

Step 2 – Open the Image

Download an image from a website or take a picture on your phone with no background. You’ll want to use a good-quality photo for the best results. Open it up in Adobe Photoshop and make sure it’s large enough that you can see all of its details. Note: If you have access to Adobe Lightroom, it’s actually easier than using Photoshop! Select Develop Module, click on Background Removal Tool, adjust your settings, and hit Auto Analyze. Photoshop automatically does most of these steps for you; however, if you prefer working in layers then go ahead and open it up in Photoshop. At any rate, be sure that Background Removal is turned on in either program before continuing.

Step 3 – Select the Area to Cut

Once you have selected your desired background removal tool (there are many free tools available online), make sure that it is possible to select just a portion of your photo. Select your entire photo if you plan on removing everything, but be careful not to get any unintended areas in your selection. Then, use your lasso tool or arrow keys on a keyboard (or use whichever tool is featured in your chosen app) and start painting over just what you want to be removed from your photo. Your goal should be similar results shown below! If you are working with a solid background vs. gradient or texture like shown below, it will often be easier to achieve better results using these techniques. But try all methods and see which works best for you!

Step 4 – Erase Background

You may want to erase the background and you can see how to do it in our Erase Background Tutorial. Here is a quick guide on the Photoshop method and GIMP method. Or, you can try out our software program: Background Remover. To cut out your subject from the background, please check out our Crop Out Tool here. It allows you to easily cut out your object from a background using the Magic Wand tool. Background removal is also called cutout or object removal, which refers to cutting or erasing a specific object (person, animal) out of its background so that it becomes isolated (or separated). This technique is widely used in various fields including graphic design, web design, and video editing. So today we will share with you 5 methods for removing background in images with step-by-step instructions for each method!

Step 5 – Export Image

In order to cut out a piece of your background and place it on top of another background, you need your image in editable layers. It is recommended that you export your images as .psd (photoshop) files, which allows for non-destructive editing. Adobe Photoshop is probably one of the most common programs used for editing photos, so it has tutorials available online for those who do not have access to photoshop. These methods are just one example and may vary from program to program. No matter what software you use though, each has tools specifically designed for creating layers and removing backgrounds from images.
